Terrana, who completed her mission, encountered Malekith. However, his search was interrupted by the arrival of the other Mandarins, who had decided to confront Malekith before he could steal their rings and previously attacked Terrana. After giving the ring to Iron Man, Malekith escaped from the Mandarin's clutches to safety, as he could no longer be located by them.
After which, the Mandarins parted from Svartalfheim. Malekith eventually discovered that the skull of Laufey was in Midgard in possession of Roxxon. He went to Jotunheim to talk with Skrymir about retrieving it. Skrymir was hesitant with invading Midgard without their king, but Malekith told him that his spies in Asgard informed him that Thor lost Mjolnir and with that the invasion of Midgard began. Killing two employees, he and the third one were interrupted by the arrival of Thor.
Malekith taunted him about the rumors of his loss of Mjolnir, enraging him, and so they battled. Then, the Giants attacked and restrained Thor as Malekith took his axe Jarnbjorn and chopped off one of his arms with it, claiming that he wouldn't need it now that he didn't have to carry his hammer. Malekith took it as a trophy and left Thor to drown. Dario Agger and his inter-realm adviser Ulik the Troll.
Agger escaped into his vault, and Malekith and the Giants surrounded the new female Thor , who came to stop them, at its entrance.
Confronting Dario Agger the Minotaur. Thor warned them to return to their realms, but Malekith left her to the Giants to deal with while he entered the vault, despite its magical locks. He demanded Dario to give him the skull but he transformed into his Minotaur form and they battled.
Malekith had the advantage until Agger used a magic axe, but Malekith was able to find the skull. As both claimed their right to it, Thor, who had defeated the Giants, destroyed it. Malekith told her that the Giants would raze Earth for this but the Odinson appeared to retrieve his hammer. Thor and the Odinson eventually came to blows before working together to defeat the Frost Giants.
Odinson attempted to stop Malekith for attacking Mifgard, but he told him that technically the giants were to blame and burned Odinson's arm before escaping to Svartalfheim.
Agger latter contacted Malekith, revealing that the skull destroyed was a decoy the giants were meant to get and the two started bargaining with the skull. Some time after the existence of Heven was revealed, Malekith became curious and started to research about it.
From rumors to torture, Malekith learned of Laussa , the new heir to Asgard who had been conceived by Freyja and Odin under Surtur's fire, and Angela , the lost daughter of Odin, but that wasn't enough.
Wanting to know more, he sought the Norns and discovered that Freyja, after losing her daughter to the Angels of Heven, struck a deal with them that cursed the Angels to suffer in pain eternally in Hel following their deaths, and no one would know it because of Odin's previous curse. Skeptical, Malekith went to Hel to see with his own eyes if it was true, finding Angels enslaved by Hela there. Serving as a vessel for Sera. While wandering the Realm of the Dead, Malekith found Sera , [6] Angela's long lost lover who was kept isolated from the other Angels in a prison cell for being insolent towards Hela.
Sera made a deal with the Dark Elf in that he would take her ring and become her vessel in exchange for information about Angela. As he thought he could use it to hurt Odin, he accepted. Revealing himself to Angela. After the child was purified, [50] Angela realized Malekith wasn't Sera at all and pointed her iron sword to his neck, making him come back to his original form.
She asked why he had helped prevent Asgard's fall, which he answered that Surtur as master of the Ten Realms would be worse than the Asgardians. He then made a deal with Angela in that he would tell her how he knew everything about Sera in exchange for her silence about his involvement on this event, and she accepted.
After telling Angela everything she wanted to know, Malekith vanished with a grin. He also kept the ring to himself, despite the fact that giving it to Angela was part of his deal with Sera.
After some time, Malekith and Agger came to a deal: Dario would give him the skull in exchange for the mineral rights of all realms Malekith conquers.
Thor appeared on the roof of Roxxon Island to stop their deal, but she was attacked by the Serpent , who possessed the Destroyer Armor.
After flying away, Malekith convinced Agger to celebrate their deal in the Dark Elf way and he teleported the two of them to Alfheim where they slaughtered various Light Elves.
Malekith eventually amassed a caval of allies from across the realms called the Dark Council , and began a campaign of conquest dubbed by himself as the War of the Realms. After targeting Alfheim first, [54] Malekith and the realms allied with him began taking over the other realms one by one, [55] faciliated by the use of the Black Bifrost for transportation across the different worlds.
When Midgard was the only realm left, Malekith and his army of allies led an all-out assault on Manhattan that resulted in most of the world's heroes being forced to retreat to Avengers Mountain. When the Valkyrior engaged him, Malekith had them slaughtered and personally decapitated Valkyrie. When four Thors - Thor Odinson, his younger self from the 6th century, his older self from Earth , and Jane Foster - arrived to battle him, Malekith bonded to the symbiote and used it to augment his dark elf acolytes; declaring himself the "Butcher of Thors".
Realizing that if the youngest Thor was killed than the present and future Thors would be erased from existence, Malekith tried to kill him; [60] but wound up in combat with the present day Thor, taking the Last Hammer of Asgard and augmenting it with living abyss to turn it into the Black Hammer of the Accursed.
Thor summoned the reforged Mjolnir and separated Malekith from the symbiote, while Young Thor lopped off one of his arms. Unable to accept his defeat, Malekith attempted to sic his Wild Hunt and bog tiger on the Thors, but his control over them was broken by his fear and the beasts instead dismembered and devoured their former master. Malekith's soul was sent to Hel , where he was greeted by Hela and Karnilla - who revealed that eating him had killed his Bog Tiger and hounds and manifested the piece of Malekith's soul embodying his child self.
The Queens of Hel then crucified Malekith and sewed his eyes open, torturing him by forcing him to watch for all eternity as his innocent child-self played with the bog tiger and hounds - which were reverted to a cub and puppies. Dark Elf Physiology: Malekith possesses various superhuman attributes, some of which are common to his race.
Though he generally avoids it, Malekith is a moderately skilled hand to hand combatant. He is also a talented and powerful sorcerer and a natural spell caster. Like all members of his race, Malekith has demonstrated a significant vulnerability to iron. For example, his mystical powers are useless against objects composed of iron. Also, being struck by an object made of iron, or even holding an iron object, can cause him great physical pain and injury whereas a similarly durable and powerful metal might cause him no discomfort at all.
Mandarin's Rings : With the rings of the Mandarin he had possessed Spectral, Remaker, Incandescence and Lightning , Malekith could formerly access to the following abilities:. The Asgardians won, but Malekith eventually got a hold of the Reality Stone , which he used to form the Aether -- a weapon that had the power to turn everything into utter evil and darkness.
The movie picks up decades later when the weapon accidentally absorbed into Jane Foster , causing the beginning of the Convergence. Malekith had been awaiting this moment for centuries, as he'd finally be able to use the Aether, bringing together an army to take down the Nine Realms.
As a villain, he doesn't seem incredibly threatening; everything from his appearance to his abilities are lackluster in comparison to other MCU villains. For instance, when Jane is taken to Asgard to have the Aether removed from her, Malekith and his army invade the planet. When he finds Jane and Queen Frigga in the palace room, he demands the weapon be handed over to him.
When they refuse, the Dark Elf and the Asgardian Queen engage in a brief fight that ends with the Queen easily beating him. Of course, Frigga is quite powerful herself, but one would think that the Leader of the Dark Elves would've been a worthy opponent. She likely would've killed him if it wasn't for Kurse hadn't come in and rescued him. To attain this end, Malekith sought to use the Reality Stone , one of the Infinity Stones , which he augmented, turning it into a superweapon called the "Aether".
The Aether had the potential to convert any matter into dark matter. Malekith's ambitions put the Dark Elves into conflict with Asgard , the self-appointed protectors of the Nine Realms. Malekith seeing the Convergence beginning. Over 5, years ago, Malekith intended to take advantage of the Convergence , a cosmic event in which the Nine Realms are aligned, to unleashed the power of the Aether at last.
Malekith attempts to unleash the Aether. The plot was foiled by the intervention of the Asgardians under the command of their king Bor , beginning the final battle of the war. Surveying the battle with his lieutenant Algrim , Malekith ordered his warriors to use Kurse Stones to give themselves enhanced strength while he moved to absorb the Aether into his own body and unleash its destructive power once and for all.
He was stopped moments before touching the Aether by Bor, who used the Bifrost Bridge to take the ancient weapon at the last minute, ending the war. In one final, spiteful attack, Malekith dropped the Dark Elf air fleet onto the battlefield, taking out the brunt of the Asgardian army, as well as almost all his own people, including his wife and son.
Malekith took advantage of the ensuing chaos, taking off on the last ship with Algrim and the several dozen remaining warriors. Once aboard, the last Dark Elves entered a state of extended hibernation until the time of the next Convergence. Thousands of years since the First Battle of Svartalfheim , during which time King Bor had died while Asgard and all the Nine Realms were currently being ruled by his son Odin , the vengeful Malekith was still in his long hyper-sleep, awaiting the chance to gain his revenge.
He was onboard the Ark as he was suddenly and unexpectedly awoken as power was returned across the Ark. He then began searching for the reason for his awakening. Malekith watches his Dark Elves awakening.
As Malekith and his remaining army began exploring the Ark, Malekith realized the reason was because the Aether had been discovered when it was accidentally absorbed into the body of a human woman named Jane Foster , signalling the beginning of the Convergence.
The Aether's reactivity allowed Malekith to sense its location as he called upon all his army to prepare for their next war against Asgard to finally reclaim their greatest weapon. Malekith first traveled back to his home world of Svartalfheim , which had been all but destroyed during the great war between the Dark Elves and Asgardian Army, with hundreds of Arks littered across the burnt wasteland. Algrim attempted to comfort Malekith by reminding him of all the Dark Elves still alive due to his actions, Malekith swore to avenge his fallen brothers by reclaiming the Aether and using its immense power to destroy Asgard and the universe.
Malekith prepares to turn Algrim into a Kursed. Malekith and the Dark Elves started searching for the Aether across all of the Nine Realms, eventually discovering that Jane Foster had been transported from Earth to Asgard in order to have the Aether removed from her body as its incredible power was slowly killing her. Knowing that the Asgardians would defend Foster and would stand a chance at defeating them in combat, Malekith devised a new plan to regain the Aether by tricking all of the armies of Asgard.
Malekith sends Algrim on a secret mission. Malekith sent his lieutenant Algrim into the city under the guise of a prisoner captured in the Battle of Vanaheim which was still raging on. As part of a ritual action, Malekith stabbed Algrim in the stomach and then stored a Kursed Stone inside Algrim's gut which would make him indestructible and allow him to destroy Asgard's defenses from the inside, allowing their Dark Elf Harrows to attack the Royal Palace of Valaskjalf with the force they needed to defeat the armies.
Malekith sent his Dark Elf Harrows to fly into Asgard and invade the city. While Algrim used the Kursed Stone to transform himself into a Kursed and freed the inmates, including Lorelei , he managed to lower Asgard's defenses.
Malekith's own ship crashed into the city and his soldiers attacked the guards. While the Dark Elves held back the Asgardian Soldiers, Malekith calmly walked through the room, ignoring the battle and destroyed Odin 's throne with a Black Hole Grenade. Malekith challenges Frigga and Jane Foster. While his army of Dark Elves continued to battle the Asgardians inside and outside the city walls, Malekith went to the palace room, where he found Queen Frigga protecting Jane Foster from harm.
As Frigga demanded that he leave under the promise that if he did, he would survive the battle, Malekith introduced himself to the pair and demanded that they hand over the Aether to him, claiming that it belonged to him and that he had survived worse battles. Malekith fights and is defeated by Frigga. When Malekith attempted to capture Foster and regain his ultimate weapon, Frigga defended her by attacking Malekith with her sword.
The pair engaged in a brief but vicious sword-fight with Frigga putting all her might and skill into defending the young human from the Dark Elf. Taken off guard by Frigga's fighting ability, Malekith was disarmed and defeated in single combat with the Asgardian Queen, with Frigga ending the fight by threatening to cut his throat. Malekith discovering Frigga 's magic deception. As Frigga held her blade to Malekith's throat, the Dark Elf remained confident as moments later, Kurse arrived and restrained Frigga, disarming her and using his unbeatable strength to hold her back.
With his enemies seemingly defeated, Malekith confidently went to grab Foster and reclaim the Aether, only to discover that she was an illusion created by Frigga's magic and the true Foster was hidden safely away in another room of the palace. Malekith's face is burnt by Thor 's lightning. Malekith called Frigga a witch and demanded to know where the Aether was.
