The buffets are typically below chair rail height - so long and low. As opposed to narrower and taller like your china cabinet. I agree your china cabinet is a beautiful piece but I don't think painting it will help, and will just decrease the value of it.
When Bernardaud uses a precious metal for decoration, the percentage of metal is high, so these dinnerware sets should never be put in a microwave. You can warm your dinner plates in the oven and use Bernardaud serveware for all cooking and baking purposes.
